Puorto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeast Caribbean Sea, approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Miami, Florida. The territory's total population is approximately 3.2 million. Spanish is the populations main language, but the official languages of the executive branch of government are both English and Spanish.
The island was conquered from Spain in the 1898 Spanish-American War, and until the late 1940s was ruled by the US military, with officials including the governor appointed by the president of the United States. The military still maintains a strong presence.
In 1948, the islanders were allowed to vote for their own governor.
There had been a push to seeking independence from the United States from the earliest days of US rule. At the same time a concerted effort in the US have wanted to incorporate Puerto Rico as a state.
The at times violent Puerto Rican nationalist movement was a major target for the FBI's COINTELPRO program, and other covert and overt US government programs.
