Minister responsible for industry and energy in the era when Portugal joined the EU. |
The Minister of Industry and Energy was a Portuguese government position from 1980 to 1995, before it was split again. During this entire period, Portugal received money from EC structural funds help to finance large infra-structure investments.
During the period, a large range of industrial sectors were privatized. The country also experienced a stronger growth in trade and tourism sectors and, from the mid-1980s, in the liberalized financial services sector, slowing industrial development. A lack of external competitiveness of industrial sectors, especially compared to East Asia in low tech sectors like shoes and garments, led to an increase of investment in services[1]
Luis Mira Amaral attended the Bilderberg conference at the end of his time as minister, in 1995. He was minister in the key period after Portugal joined the European Union in 1986.
