Sir Martin Furnival Jones qualified as a solicitor before joining MI5, possibly in 1937[1], possibly in 1941.[2] During World War II, he worked at the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) and the War Office.[3]

Director General of MI5

When Martin Furnival Jones became Director General of MI5 in December 1965 he "inherited an organization paralysed by the fear of a Soviet mole". He retired in 1972.[1]

Later activities

After retiring from MI5, he "worked briefly as a security consultant for ICI and Playboy". [4] In October 1981 he and his former Deputy Director General, Anthony Simkins, wrote to The Times to state their belief in the innocence of his predecessor, Sir Roger Hollis.[5]
