Because of it hot and humid Central African location, the Ambassador position is left to Career diplomats instead of political appointees. The country has large petroleum reserves, which is always of interest to the United States.
The traditional French dominance in the region has been challenged by the US after the end of the Cold War in 1990, in a general strategy for dominance over Africa.
