After 17 years of research he wrote Day of Deceit, which claims that Washingtont was aware of the Japanese attack, but that this information was withheld from Admiral Kimmel, the Hawaii commander, in order to inflame US sentiment against the Japanese and so facilitate the US mobilisation for entry into World War II.[1]
