Born in England on the day the Russians liberated Auschwitz. Read Chinese and Modern Languages at University of Cambridge. Taught in Shanghai China for two years during the last months of Mao Zedong's life and witnessed the early stages of the transition to the new régime. Spent working life first teaching, then in piano manufacture and restoration.
