A royal mistress is the historical position and sometimes unofficial title of the extramarital lover of a monarch or an heir apparent, who was expected to provide certain services, such as sexual or romantic intimacy.[3] In this position they could gain favors, money, and land for themselves and their allies.[4][5] They could sway the monarch's decisions and had access to confidential information. In their position they could set trends in fashion, art, and culture.
