An opioid is a drug which acts upon the body in a similar way to opium. Many have been invented since the development of the first, morphine. Some are totally synthetic,[citation needed] some are refinements of a plant product such as opium.

Fatal overdoses can happen,especially with the more potent opioids such as fentanyl.

Opioids are widely used, especially in the US as analgesic drugs. The National Institutes of Health estimates some 3 million Americans are addicted to opioids.[1]
