Honeypot  (entrapment)
A spooky concept.

Not to be confused with Honeytrap, where sexual relationships are used for political (including state espionage) or monetary purpose.

In computer terminology, a honeypot is a false website or similar, designed to lure in users for identification and entrapment.

It can also mean a computer security mechanism set to detect, deflect, or, in some manner, counteract attempts at unauthorized use of information systems.

Use

JTRIG employs honeytraps, according to a presentation leaked by Edward Snowden, which the group described as "a great option" and "very successful when it works."

Possible examples

Although it is open source, some commentators have suggested that Tor is a honeytrap, noting that it continues to receive funding from the US government.
