Honeypot (entrapment) | |
---|---|
A spooky concept. |
Not to be confused with Honeytrap, where sexual relationships are used for political (including state espionage) or monetary purpose.
In computer terminology, a honeypot is a false website or similar, designed to lure in users for identification and entrapment.
It can also mean a computer security mechanism set to detect, deflect, or, in some manner, counteract attempts at unauthorized use of information systems.
Use
JTRIG employs honeytraps, according to a presentation leaked by Edward Snowden, which the group described as "a great option" and "very successful when it works." [1][2]
Possible examples
Although it is open source, some commentators have suggested that Tor is a honeytrap, noting that it continues to receive funding from the US government.
