Feudalism was a social system that prevailed in medieval Europe between the 9th and 15th centuries.

It emphasised a fixed hierarchy of duties with low social mobility.

The word "neofeudalism" is used to refer, disparagingly, to developments around the world in the 21st century, emphasising the decreasing de facto decision making power or social mobility of the precariat.
