Western democracies are becoming police states supported by a public/private surveillance and propaganda apparatus that has a reach and depth unparalleled in human history. Unlike the overt methods of repression in 'traditional' totalitarian states (e.g. Stalinist Russia, Nazi Germany) the western model relies largely on psychological manipulation and indirect methods of social control to pacify the populace and 'neutralize' dissenters and those who deviate from conventional wisdom. It presses into service everything from news and entertainment media, Hollywood movies, TV programs and an online encyclopedia to propagate and reinforce 'narratives' that tell the citizenry what and how to think. Such a system is much harder to fight than one in which there is no ambiguity about how power is exercised and who is behind it.
