Support for Ivan Illich

He was impressed by Ivan Illich and "saw him as a key figure in the American Church’s future".[1] Illich was permanently attached to his diocese.[2] He gave his influential support to Illich's 1956 appointment as vice-rector of the Catholic University at Ponce in Puerto Rico.

Spellman died in December 1967. He had protected Illich against those in the Roman Catholic Church who were upset by his radical ideas for social reform; in 1968 Illich was summoned to the Vatican and called to subjected to an inquisition.[3]
