MediaWiki talk:Category Tree
Revision as of 03:58, 11 July 2014 by Robin (talk | contribs) (→Explanation of where Category Tree is heading: new section)
Does this have to be a 'tree' - strictly speaking. i.e. Does anything break if a category is a sub-category of more than one other category?

- You're right, 'Tree' is not strictly accurate. A category can be a sub category of more than one parent category. For example the 'torture category is currently a sub category of 'Miscellany', 'War on Terror' and 'Abuse of power', which is itself a sub category of Miscellany !! - Everything works OK but that's what I mean by the category tree being in a mess - It's just grown like Noddy. Not easy to be too disciplined when you're authoring away like mad and faced with selecting an appropriate category :-)). --Peter P 07:29, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Explanation of where Category Tree is heading
I'm continuing to remove more or less all the manually edited categories I come across, but not because I want to get rid of categories altogether. Instead, I favour their automatic generation from semantic content (see, for example, Category:Websites) - since this gives us the best of both worlds:
- Easy modification and integration with SMW
- A structure which is quite familiar to most wiki users
