Thomas Sankara, as President of Burkina Faso, left the IMF and World Bank[citation needed] and in 1985 joined Fidel Castro in his call for the creation of a common front of Southern countries against paying off debt.[1]
Assassination
On 15 October 1987, Sankara was killed by an armed group with twelve other officials in a coup d'état.
Prince Johnson, a former Liberian warlord allied to Charles Taylor, told Liberia's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) that it was engineered by Taylor.[2]
