A backchannel is an unofficial diplomatic channel.

Examples

JFK opened a backchannel to Nikita Khrushchev during the Cuban missile crisis because he did understood that the official communications were being subverted. This was very important in foiling the ambitions of some of his military staff and avoiding nuclear war.[1][2]
