The University of Le Mans (Le Mans Université) is a public university, based in Le Mans, France. The university is under the Academy of Nantes.
History
The university opened in 1977, making it one of the younger universities in France. In 1965 the decision was made to establish a literary college on the outskirts of Le Mans. At that time this was planned as a branch of the University of Caen. The Vaurouzé hill was chosen as the construction site, as there was enough space for an extension. The proximity of the hospital was also judged to be positive, as this would have a positive effect on an expansion into the medical department, possibly with its own clinic as an expansion option. The first building, built in 1966, was the local center of school and university works, abbreviated to CLOUS (Center local des œuvres universitaires et scolaires). After that, the campus grew annually, and in 1969 the campus was administratively separated from the home university of Caen. However, since it was not yet able to offer the full range of university offers, it was not yet awarded the title of university, but was considered a technical college. It was not until 1975 that the two subjects law and literature were added to the curriculum, followed by the sciences as the last missing subject in 1977. The minister then officially named the campus a university.
