Bruce Sizer was one of eight candidates in the Clacton by-election, 2014 when he came 6th with 205 votes. A consultant oncologist at Colchester Hospital, Dr Sizer was standing as a single issue candidate to get health and cancer care on to the agenda of the political parties. He was Joint Clinical Director of the Essex Cancer Network from 2006 until 2008 and is Oncology Editor for the Oxford Concise Medical Dictionary.[1]
Academic background
Dr Bruce Sizer was appointed Consultant in Clinical Oncology at Essex County Hospital and Colchester General Hospital in 1996 and was Clinical Director of Cancer Services from 1999–2006 before being appointed Joint Clinical Director of the Essex Cancer Network, until 2008. Dr Sizer graduated from Birmingham University in 1980 with a BSc (Hons) degree in Pharmacology and in Medicine in 1983, before undertaking specialist training in oncology at Cambridge and St Thomas' Hospital, London. He spent 3 years at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne, Australia and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Radiologists in 1994. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), previously a member of the RCR's Audit Sub Committee (1997–1999), and the Board of the Faculty of Clinical Oncology 2006-2009. Other national responsibilities have included membership of the Cancer Clinical Working Party of the National Casemix Office at the Department of Health and he currently sits on the Professional Standards Board of RCR . He currently leads the Cancer Research Dept at Essex County Hospital, recruiting over 500 patients to national and international studies in the last 10 years. He is also a Principal Investigator in several studies in collaboration with the Royal Marsden Hospital in new chemotherapy drugs in prostate cancer and chemoradiotherapy in rectal cancer, with colorectal surgical colleagues at the Iceni Centre for laparoscopic surgery at Colchester General Hospital, and the Postgraduate Medical Institute at Anglia Ruskin University.
