Lede relevance?

As I understand it, a lede precedes the main body of the article, and it gives the reader the main idea of what is to come. Maybe I'm being slow this morning, but I fail to see how in an article about Magnus Malan, it is relevant that:

"United Nations Commissioner for Namibia, Bernt Carlsson, was targeted and killed on the evening Pan Am Flight 103." ?

This, even if true, does not seem to me to belong here. It might belong on the Bernt Carlsson and Pan Am Flight 103 pages, but not here. So why here, and why in the lede?

Robin (talk) 07:02, 30 October 2013 (GMT)

The relevance of "United Nations Commissioner for Namibia, Bernt Carlsson, was targeted and killed on the evening Pan Am Flight 103." in the lede would have been obvious as soon as the edit (which I started at 16:15 yesterday) was saved at 17:13. Unfortunately, Robin, you had prematurely edited out that sentence from the lede at 16:35, so I simply reinserted it at 17:19.
In view of that editorial muddle, I hope you agree that the following extract from Magnus Malan#CCB Assassins and Lockerbie makes the lede sentence entirely appropriate:
"In a 2011 article entitled "Lockerbie: Ayatollah's Vengeance Exacted by Botha's Regime", former diplomat Patrick Haseldine alleged that operatives of the apartheid regime's Civil Cooperation Bureau cut the padlock on security door CP2 at Heathrow airport, leading to the Pan Am baggage area, and planted the suitcase bomb which sabotaged Clipper Maid of the Seas over Lockerbie on 21 December 1988."
Will you reinsert it, or shall I?--Patrick Haseldine (talk) 10:40, 30 October 2013 (GMT)
I've just given the article a decent going over, including a revision of the lede to make clear the connection to Magnus Malan. He does not yet feature, by the way, in our CCB article... Robin (talk) 15:08, 30 October 2013 (GMT)
