Claudia Sheinbaum is a Mexican climate scientist and politician who won a landslide victory on 2 June 2024 to become Mexico’s first female president, inheriting the project of her mentor and outgoing leader, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose popularity among the poor helped drive her triumph.[1]

Claudia Sheinbaum, a leftwing former mayor of Mexico City, won the presidency with between 58.3% and 60.7% of the vote, according to a rapid sample count by Mexico’s electoral authority.

The ruling coalition led by Sheinbaum’s Morena party was also on track for a possible two-thirds super-majority in both houses of Congress, which would allow the coalition to pass constitutional reforms without opposition support. The big win for Sheinbaum was consistent with polls throughout the campaign.[2]

Currency declines

The Financial Times reported "Peso falls as Claudia Sheinbaum wins Mexico presidency by landslide".[3]

Congratulations

Yanis Varoufakis posted on X:

Congratulations to friend and fellow traveller Claudia Sheinbaum. Winning the Presidency of Mexico is not just a confirmation of Andres Manuel's policies in favour of the poor but a giant leap for radical feminism and ecology. A rare glimmer of hope in a bleak era.[4]

As did Jeremy Corbyn:

Congratulations to Claudia Sheinbaum, the first woman to be elected President of Mexico.
This is a victory for the people of Mexico, for social justice and for the future of our planet.[5]

Julian Assange

Gabriel Shipton, brother of Julian Assange, posted:

When she was Mayor of Mexico City, President ⁦@Claudiashein⁩ gave Julian the Keys to México City. Mexico has so much love for Julian Assange.[6]
