Kill box
Kill box (Military concept) | |
---|---|
A kill box is a military concept initially defined by the US Airforce but later adopted by other services.[1]
A kill box serves as a predetermined space within specific rules of engagement are applied. These rules determine when and how friendly forces can use lethal force against identified threats. By establishing clear boundaries and criteria for engagement, a kill box enables military units to operate with a higher level of confidence and it reduces the chance of friendly fire.
The enemy in a kill box faces combined firepower, which can include aircraft, drones, artillery, and/or other assets. The goal is to neutralize the enemy threat fast and effectively, minimizing the risk for friendly forces.
Entering a kill box also means that the enemy's freedom of movement and ability to maneuver may be severely restricted. They are operating within a defined space where friendly forces have established control/surveillance and are actively seeking to engage and eliminate them. This can limit the enemy's options for evasion or escape, making it more difficult for them to survive or continue their operations.
