Margaret Sanger was a US advocate of contraception and population control who played a pivotal role in shaping Western policy and practice on contraception, sex education, abortion and the establishment of 20th century eugenics. She was the indirect founder of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and popularized the euphemism of "birth control". Sanger was associated with prominent eugenicists of her day, such as Havelock Ellis or H. G. Wells, and was a close friend of the Rockefeller family.
