Steve Reed is a British politician who was appointed Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government in September 2025, having previously been Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs from 2024 to 2025.[1]

Reed was Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs from September 2023 to July 2024, for Communities and Local Government from 2020 to 2021, and for Justice from 2021 to 2023.

A member of the Labour and Co-operative Party, Reed has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Streatham and Croydon North, formerly Croydon North since 2012. Prior to his election to Parliament, he was Leader of Lambeth London Borough Council from 2006 to 2012.[2]

Problematic history

On 5 May 2026, investigative journalist Paul Holden posted on X:[3]

"@SteveReedMP has been all over the media this past week. But none of those outlets have bothered asking him about his disturbing, unethical rise to the top of the Labour Party.

"I tell that full, problematic story in Double Down News' YouTube video 'Uncovered: The Secret Plot to Destroy Zack Polanski'."[4]

Labour Together

On 13 October 2025, investigative journalist Paul Holden wrote:

"Inside Croydon reported on the politics of the Borough of Croydon, the stomping ground of Steve Reed MP. It reported critically, but I believe accurately, on Reed and his local political allies, as well the Labour-led Croydon Council.

"Croydon Council declared effective bankruptcy in 2020 while under the control of the very same people Inside Croydon was reporting on.

"Reed, as my book shows, was one of Morgan McSweeney’s closest collaborators, in addition to serving as a director of Labour Together for seven years between 2016 and 2023.[5]
