Lewis Thompson Preston Sr. was born in 27 Nov 1899 and grew up in Monmouth, New Jersey. His uncle was head of the house in which he grew up with his parents until at least 1920. In 1925 he married [[Priscilla Baldwin]]. He attended Harvard and graduated in 1924. His ''[[New York Times]]'' obituary describes him as a "sportsman", but notes his connections to the US establishment, such as that he once accompanied [[Kermit Roosevelt Sr.|Kermit Roosevelt (presumably "Sr.")]] on a round the world hunting trip. In 1933, he won medal honours in the qualifying round of the 38th annual Southern Cross golf tournament. He was also a keen tennis player.

In 1925 he married [[Priscilla Baldwin]], son of [[Joseph Clark Baldwin Jr.]] with whom he had [[Lewis Thompson Preston]].
