Pro-Palestinian doctor being persecuted by UK government at behest of the Israel lobby

Rahmeh Aladwan is a British/Palestinian NHS resident doctor who is a trainee trauma and orthopaedic surgeon. She has been suspended by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) after posting alleged antisemitic comments on social media.[1]

On 18 January 2026, Dr Aladwan posted on X:

"NHS doctors arrested in Britain for speech against Israel: 5+

"IOF soldiers arrested in Britain for mass murder, war crimes, and genocide: 0

"This is the real hierarchy (of racism)."[2]

Action by the Met

Bail extended twice

On 8 March 2026, Dr Aladwan posted on X:

"Update on my arrests: My bail return date was extended by the Metropolitan Police this week—for the second time.

"The CPS now have 3 months to decide whether to charge me or drop the case.

"My crime? X posts naming Jewish supremacy and supporting the Palestinian right to armed resistance against the illegal Jewish occupation.

"In the meantime, plans have been made with lawyers on next steps for suing the police.

"If they charge me, we will humiliate the Met Police in court and expose their collusion with the zionist jewish lobby.

"The British people deserve to know who is really running this country.

"We will fight. We will win.

"Free Palestine and Britain from Jewish supremacy."[3]

Four arrests

On 16 January 2026, Dr Aladwan posted on X:

"Today, I was arrested for the fourth time in less than three months. During interrogation, officers explicitly stated, 'Jews keep calling' to report me." She named Metropolitan Police officers Saul Carroll and Steve Burgess as the officials involved in her latest arrest on January 15. Previous arrests occurred on 21 October, 4 December, and 22 December 2025.

Aladwan said she was released on bail with restrictive conditions, combining all prior arrests. She remains under a form of house arrest, barred from attending Palestine-related events in London, and prohibited from posting anything that could "stir up racial hatred" or "express support for a proscribed organisation" – which she denies doing.

"This is state-sponsored harassment and judicial terrorism, carried out by the British state in partnership with the UK Israel lobby and also at the apparent behest of the Jews who 'keep calling' the police, including the Anti-Terrorism Hotline, to silence me," she wrote.

She added that: "The Israel lobby is an enemy to free speech and civil liberties in Britain."[4]

Action by the GMC

Dr Rahmeh Aladwan has successfully resisted attempts by the General Medical Council (GMC) to impose restrictions on her medical practice after facing complaints about her outspoken support for Palestine on social media.

Following a high-profile Interim Orders Tribunal (IOT) hearing at the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) on 25 September 2025, the panel ruled that no order was necessary on Dr Aladwan’s registration, rejecting the GMC’s arguments that interim conditions or suspension were required.

The case has attracted significant attention because the complaints against Dr Aladwan arose from political statements made online opposing Israeli government actions in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The GMC presented allegations that her posts could be considered antisemitic, supportive of terrorism, or otherwise damaging to public trust in the profession. However, Dr Aladwan, represented by Barrister Tom Gillie of Matrix Chambers and Rahman Lowe Partner, Zillur Rahman, argued that her posts were a legitimate exercise of free speech, consistent with Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

GMC application dismissed

In its written determination, the Tribunal recognised the fundamental importance of freedom of expression, particularly where political speech is concerned, and concluded:

  • There was no evidence that patient safety had been put at risk.
  • The GMC’s concerns arose solely from political statements, not from Dr Aladwan’s clinical practice, which remains unblemished.
  • A “reasonable and fully informed member of the public” would not be alarmed to learn that she continued unrestricted practice while the investigation proceeds.

The Tribunal emphasised that it was not satisfied the statutory test for imposing an interim order had been met, and that proportionality required dismissal of the GMC’s application.

Refusal to be silenced

Speaking after the ruling, Dr Aladwan said:

“This is a victory not just for me, but for all those who believe in the right to speak out against injustice. As a Palestinian, I have lost dozens of friends and family members in Gaza. I will not be silenced for expressing my grief and my opposition to war crimes. Today’s decision is a reminder that doctors, like all citizens, are entitled to freedom of conscience and freedom of speech.”

Her solicitors, Rahman Lowe, described the case as an example of politically motivated complaints designed to silence pro-Palestinian voices in the UK:

“This outcome sends a clear message: doctors cannot be targeted with regulatory sanctions simply for criticising state violence or advocating for human rights. Attempts to equate solidarity with Palestine with professional misconduct are deeply troubling and must be resisted.”

“We welcome the decision of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS), which is a victory for those that oppose the actions of the Israeli state in Gaza and free speech.

"We are deeply concerned that the GMC chose to investigate Dr Aladwan’s fitness to practise medicine simply because she spoke out against apartheid and injustice in Palestine. It is clear that this process was driven by pressure from pro-Israeli lobby groups, and was part of a wider, unacceptable attempt to suppress pro-Palestinian advocacy. The Tribunal has rightly rejected that attempt.”

The decision is likely to resonate widely in ongoing debates about academic freedom, political speech, and the rights of professionals to engage in public discourse without fear of reprisal.[5]

Second IOT application

On 27 November 2025, following a second application by the GMC, the Interim Orders Tribunal suspended Dr Aladwan from the UK medical register for 15 months while her fitness to practise is investigated.[6]

On 17 December 2025, Dr Aladwan posted on X:

Today marks three weeks since the UK pro-Israel Jewish lobby had my medical licence suspended for 15 months because I dared to:
