On 28 February 2026, Israel and the United States launched a coordinated attack on Iran. Codenamed Operation Roaring Lion by Israel and Epic Fury by the US, it soon gained the unofficial name Operation Epstein Fury due to it creating a distraction from the Jeffrey Epstein revelations.

Marco Rubio explained on 3rd of March, that the US administration assumed that Israel was about to attack in the near future and that Iran would then retaliate against US forces in the region, so the decision was made to strike preemptively. The remark has been described as possibly the most damaging comment for Israel, unfortunate and a bit of a faux pas. Trita Parsi points out that he was in a closed meeting with former government officials, analysts and military types who all thought that Iran will not close the strait or attack the GCC states (since this would be too costly), which in his view reflects on the thinking of current decision makers in the administration. A US military commander has told his troops eschatological reasons for why the conflict is taking place at at least one installation, amidst a range of similar incidents of the general sort.

“This war is about the greater Israel project. Netanyahu has been advocatoing for this war for 40 years. He's been bragging that finally he got a president to do his bidding. And we need to listen to what the Israelis are saying in Hebrew and not what they are saying in English. Because what they are saying in Englsih is basically PR meant to basically persuade people of their goals. But if you listen to what they say in Hebrew [...] it's the opposite of what they say in English. [...] they have no consideration if this will impact the global economy, will disrupt basically safety and security. They frame their own security as in these terms. The only way we could feel safe as Israelis, is we have around us failed states, [...]”

President Trump said it was a Pearl Harbor-like surprise attack:

One thing you don't want to signal too much, you know. When we go in, we went in very hard, and we didn't tell anybody about it because we wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan. Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor? We had a surprise, and we did. And because of that surprise we knocked out the first two days 50%, and much more than we anticipated doing. So if I go and tell everybody about it, there's no longer a surprise, right?

Minab massacre

On 28 February 2026, the first day of the war, at least 160 pre-teen students and teachers were killed in a missile strike at a school in in Minab in southern Iran. The killings seem to have been deliberate, to target the sons and daughters of military personnel in the area.
