John Patrick Dimmer Jr. was a CIA spook who was the final Chief of JMWAVE (Miami Station) from 1965 until 1967, working against Cuba, before being transferred to the Domestic Operations Division in New York. Previously, as Chief of Station in Bern, he worked to discredit investigators into the JFK assassination.

Education

He was born in 1919 in Portland, Maine. He attended the University of Maine[1]. During World War 2 he enlisted in the US Army and joined Military Intelligence (G-2).[2]

Career

In 1962 he wrote an article for the CIA journal Studies In Intelligence, "Observations about the Double Agent".[3]

He was Chief of Station in Bern, Switzerland in 1963.[4] Dimmer was the CIA liaison with the FBI during the FBI's investigation of Richard Gibson of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee after the assassination of JFK.[5]

A FBI memo from Bern in November, 1964 stated, in regards to the serialization of a book by Joachim Joesten on the assassination of President Kennedy in a Zurich newspaper, that "Mr. John Dimmer, (covert CIA), very informally contacted some of his press contacts and furnished them information strictly off the record from his own files against Joesten. He suggested to his contacts that they could perhaps discredit Joesten. This action by Mr. Dimmer was probably taken without knowledge of his own headquarters and was furnished to me on a very personal basis and is strictly for the Bureau's infromation only."[5]

A 1965 FBI memo from Bern to Director regarding Mark Lane said that "Re Bern letter 1/5/65. On 1/6/65 John Dimmer, Chief, Office of Special Assistant (covert CIA), the Embassy, Bern, confidentially informed that he had learned that Lane was to speak in Zurich, Switzerland, some time in the next two weeks on the subject of Oswald's innocence in the killing of President Kennedy. Lane's talk is alleged to be sponsored by Heinrich Buchbinder, well known Swiss Trotskyite who is prominent in the Swiss Movement Against Atomic Armament (Schweizerische Bewegung gegen die Atomare Aufrustung - SBGAM). At Dimmer's request, he was furnished background material concerning Lane."[6]

He was the final Chief of JMWAVE (Miami Station) from June 1965 until March 1967[7] and managed several officers who oversaw numerous sabotage operations targeting Cuba. One domestic operation in that period Dimmer authorized was a joint surveillance venture with the FBI targeting Dr. Martin Luther King.[8] Dimmer was reassigned from Miami Station to manage the Domestic Contacts Division operations in New York.[2]

Dimmer and William Hood were known as the Vienna Choirboys[why?].[7]

1970-73 he was Chief of Station in Bonn, West Germany.

He retired during the 1970s.
