The Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) is a group of more than 70 countries, international organizations and non-government organizations, and private sector companies that have come together to achieve the vision of a world safe and secure from global health threats posed by infectious diseases.
- In the context of public health emergencies, legal preparedness is the capability to map, develop, refine, and utilize legal instruments across sectors that enable the implementation of capacities to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats. This involves identification of legal approaches that can promote (or hinder) an effective response to a public health event and the strategic development and refinement of legal instruments to facilitate the implementation of capacities needed for strong health systems.[1]
- Support antimicrobial resistance efforts in the political space, including by keeping AMR on the agenda at the highest political levels at multiple fora and across sectors.[2]
- The continuing emergence of newly discovered pathogens and of previously undetected infectious diseases highlights the necessity of sustainable national laboratory systems and networks for the detection, identification and characterization of unusual organisms with pandemic potential or regional consequence.[3]
- Strengthen foundational indicator (syndromic) and event-based surveillance systems to be able to detect events of significance for public health (animal, human, environment) and health security. Improve communication and collaboration across sectors and between sub-national, national, regional and global levels of authority regarding surveillance of events of public health significance.
- Strengthen sustainable public health institutions, structures and systems to support functions of epidemiology. Expand regional and national networks to promote collaboration and maximize efficient and sustainable uses of available resources. Expedite building field epidemiology capacity under Public vs Human One Health approach. Enhance and promote utilizing public health information for evidence-based decision making and resource mobilization at regional and national levels.[4]
- Aims to support its members to develop and strengthen their capacity and capability to prepare for, prevent, detect, and respond to zoonotic disease threats, using a One Health approach.[5]
