Edward S. "Ed" Juchniewicz is a CIA spook who was Chief of Station before ending his career as Assistant Deputy Director for Operations.
Education
Prior to joining the CIA, he was a Senior Noncommissioned Intelligence Officer.
He attended the Naval Intelligence Language School, Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service, and Sophia University in Tokyo.[1]
Career
He joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1953 and retired in 1986 as Associate Deputy Director for Operations.[1] In July 1963 he was an economic assistant at the Bern, Switzerland Embassy. In July 1967 he was transferred to Warsaw, Poland. In 1970 he was transferred to the Tokyo, Japan Embassy. In November 1974 he was back at Headquarters, and by April 1978 had been transferred to Singapore.[2]
As acting deputy director, he helped Gust Avrakotos approving of his aggressive campaign in Afghanistan and would later champion his cause. At one stage Juchniewicz went to the director and said that Afghanistan was going nowhere and that the Agency had to get tougher. According to him the director said, 'Go ahead, make your call, you’re in charge.' He immediately arranged for Avrakotos to get the permanent position running the Afghan operation.[3] He was also involved in Iran Contra.
Later activities
Since retirement, he has been involved in the intelligence and communications fields as president of ESL International (1986-1990) and an Advisory Board member of Elsin Corporation, a subsidiary of TRACOR, Inc. (1990-1991).[1] He was a Board Member at Digital Ally, Inc.[1]
Juchniewicz sat on the Advisory Board at the Higgins Foundation on Terrorism in Washington, DC.[1]
Juchniewicz has acted as a consultant on espionage to the PBS television series "Frontline."[1]
He might have been a member of the Knights of Malta.[3]
In 1993 might have been laying the propaganda groundwork for a false flag or similar, blaming antiaircraft missiles given by the CIA to the Afghan mujahedeen, gone astray. A 1993 article in the New York Times quoted him as saying "The Iranians have already captured or otherwise obtained some Stingers and continue to try to accumulate them. I understand why people are exercised. I wouldn't want one to hit the airplane I'm on."[4]
