The Palestinian dead also have names
1. I unreservedly condemn last night’s murder of a young Jewish couple, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, in Washington DC where they worked for the Israeli Embassy.[1]
2. I’m also surprised at the inexplicable failures of security that allowed the murders to take place outside the Capital Jewish Museum, an obviously high profile and sensitive location.
3. The murders are heinous in themselves. Murder is no way to solve political problems or settle arguments of any kind.
4. The murders are also totally counterproductive for the Palestinian cause, which the murderer, Elias Rodriguez, purported to support.
5. He succeeded in tainting the peaceful chant of “Free, free Palestine!” with echoes of violence and murder.
6. He succeeded in displacing the Gaza Genocide from global news headlines, to be replaced with headlines about the antisemitic murder of Jews.
7. He achieved all this the day after the Washington Post warned that Israel’s destruction and starvation of Gaza was making Israel a “global pariah”.
8. All of this raises many questions about the perpetrator, his motives, his associates, anyone influencing or directing his actions, how he came to be outside the Capital Jewish Museum at the time of the murders.
9. Further noting that the event was a ‘cocktail evening’ for the diplomatic community which included as special guests “humanitarian aid organisers responding to humanitarian crises in the Middle East, including Gaza” (BBC).[2]
