The University of National and World Economy is a university in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Notable alumni of the university are five Prime Ministers of Bulgaria – Reneta Indzhova, Stefan Sofiyanski, Ivan Kostov, Marin Raykov and Plamen Oresharski; the current Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund – Kristalina Georgieva; and the director of the Financial Markets Group at the London School of Economics and former Minister of Finance of Bulgaria Simeon Djankov.
History
The university goes back to the Free University of Political Science and Economics, founded on July 5, 1920. Stefan Bobchev became the first rector. In 1940 the university was renamed the State College of Finance and Administrative Sciences, which was incorporated into the University of Sofia after the communists seized power in 1947 as the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences.
In 1953, the communist government decided to spin off the faculty and restore the university as High Economic Institute, renamed to High Economic Institute Karl Marx. The university has had its current name since the fall of communism in Bulgaria.[1]
