Career

Melady was George H. W. Bush's United States Ambassador to the Holy See. According to the Associated Press, his first instruction, now declassified, was to influence the Vatican to recognize the state of Israel, something which was done a few years later in 1993.[1]

From 2002 until his death he served as the Senior Diplomat in residence at The Institute of World Politics in Washington, DC.
