Scapegoating has an important role in mass formation, as highlighted by Mattias Desmet.

Establishment figures explicitly scapegoated those who declined the COVID-19 jabs.^[1]

Unfounded scientific claims were made about the efficacy of face masks, demanding that people wear them continuously when in public.
