Sarah-Jane McDonough is a Labour Co-op Councillor on Stevenage Borough Council who has demanded the refund of all her membership fees and donations to the party following the revelation that senior HQ staff conspired to sabotage Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.[1]

Letter to Transport Secretary

On 3 April 2020, Cllr McDonough posted on her Facebook page:

I sent the following email a few days ago to Grant Shapps MP - The Secretary of State for Transport. No reply as of yet.

Dear Mr Shapps,

I am writing to you on behalf of non essential rail staff who feel they are being put in danger by being forced to come in to work.

Ticket office, gateline and other non safety critical, non essential staff are being told to come in to work or use annual or unpaid leave.

Even after you said - in the Transport Select Committee on the 25th March - that you did not expect gateline and ticket office staff to be coming in to work - the ticket office remains open at Stevenage and other stations up and down the network.

Avanti West Coast at Euston station have called back staff who were previously stepped down - against government advice for non essential staff to stay at home.

I have been contacted by rail staff from Stevenage, Peterborough, Milton Keynes, Watford, Potters Bar and your own constituency of Welwyn Hatfield.

These people work in customer service roles and do not have any safety critical training to physically run the trains.

Yet, they are travelling in to London on the same public transport that our NHS staff MUST use and putting people in danger.

They are being told to come in or take their annual leave or unpaid leave.

These companies are using loopholes in the policy regarding key workers to force staff to come in, when it is obviously unnecessary.

I am concerned for their safety, the safety of their families and for the NHS and other essential workers travelling on the same network as them.

I would appreciate if you could look in to this as a matter of urgency, before anyone else is put at risk.

Kind regards,

Cllr Sarah-Jane McDonough

Labour and Co-operative

Roebuck ward

Stevenage Borough Council[2]
