Rudolf Walter Richard Hess (Heß in German) was a German politician and a leading member of the Nazi Party in Nazi Germany. Appointed Deputy Führer to Adolf Hitler in 1933, Hess held that position until 1941, when he flew solo to Scotland in an attempt to negotiate peace with the United Kingdom during World War II. He was taken prisoner and eventually convicted of crimes against peace at the Nuremberg trials.

Flight to Scotland

The circumstances around his flight to Scotland are still highly unclear. The British government was highly secretive about it from the start, and still is more than a century later, giving every indication that something is being hidden.

Prison

Hess was not convicted to death at Nuremberg, but life imprisonment. He was still serving his life sentence incommunicado at the time of his suicide in 1987, unable to communicate with the outside world, forbidden to talk with his son about political events, his diary taken away from him each day to be destroyed, his letters censored and scissored to excise illicit content.[1]

As an exclusive, and as part of his school paper assignment, Ralph Niemeyer managed to get permission for an interview with Heß in Spandau in the early 1980s. According to Niemeyer, Heß during the interview might have been replaced with a body double[2].
