Richard Burgon (born 19 September 1980) is a British Labour Party politician serving as Member of Parliament (MP) for Leeds East since 8 May 2015 and as Secretary of the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs, which represents the Bennite tradition within the Parliamentary Labour Party.[1]
Richard Burgon stood for election as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party following the resignation on 6 November 2019 of Tom Watson.[2] Angela Rayner was elected Deputy Leader in April 2020.
Shadow cabinet
Richard Burgon was appointed Shadow Economic Secretary to the Treasury (City Minister) in September 2015 by new Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Burgon was promoted to Shadow Justice Secretary and Shadow Lord Chancellor in June 2016 following the organised mass resignations in protest against the leadership of Corbyn.
Background
