Phobia (fear)
An irrational, sometimes overwhelming fear

A phobia is an irrational fear. Many people have a range of phobias, whether about spiders, heights, the dark etc. These are only subject to limted conscious control, but usually do not have much impact on people's lives. The phobias of particular interest to this project are those which are cultivated for purposes of social control. Notable amongst these in the modern era is Islamophobia.

Nature

Although they often have a rational basis (such as fear of falling), phobias are an unreasoning fear.

Even as they preach about the importance of tolerance, many groups are in fact promoting Islamophobia.

Xenophobia

Xenophobia is the fear of foreigners. This is arguably on the rise in Western Europe, connected to Islamophobia, after large numbers of immigrants have arrived after being NATO attacks have driven them out of their home countries such as Libya, Iraq or Syria. In 2015, the UNHCR reported a large increase in displaced persons, or which the majority were children.

Russophobia

Russophobia, fear of Russians, struck USA most notably during the Cold War, during the so-called "Red Scare".
