Louise Ellman is a British politician who has been the Member of Parliament for Liverpool Riverside constituency since the 1997 General Election.
On 16 October 2019, Dame Ellman announced her decision to quit the Labour Party, saying Jeremy Corbyn is "not fit" to become prime minister.[1] Her decision came days before she was due to face a trigger ballot by local members on whether to make her face a selection contest. CLP members were confident of a successful trigger vote after Ms Ellman refused to answer when asked at an All Members Meeting whether she would support a Corbyn government.[2]
Biography
According to her biography in JC Power 100:
- Labour MP for Liverpool Riverside since 1997, the 62-year-old is probably Israel’s staunchest supporter in an often hostile Commons. She came to Westminster after leading Lancashire County Council. Her varied responsibilities include sitting on the Transport Select Committee, a vice-presidency of the Local Government Association, and board membership of Merseyside arts and cultural organisations. She also chairs the Jewish Labour Movement, the successor organisation to Poale Zion, and is a Labour Friends of Israel vice-chair.[3]
