Capital city of Ukraine

Kiev or Kyiv is the capital and most populous city of the country of Ukraine. Situated in north-central Ukraine along the Dnieper River, Kyiv has nearly three million inhabitants and is ranked seventh in population size in Europe.[1]

Pronunciation

Kiev was the standardised spelling when the city was part of the Soviet Union, and continued to be used after the union dissolved in 1991.

The Ukrainian government legally approved a switch to Kyiv in 1995, but the issue gained added importance for many Ukrainians in 2014, when the pro-Russian leader Viktor Yanukovych was ousted and the country began to seek closer ties with the EU and NATO.

Many Ukrainians see the name Kiev as a relic of the country’s Soviet past, as it is closer to the pronunciation in Russian, whereas Kyiv matches the pronunciation in Ukrainian.[2]

2022 Russian invasion of UkraineIn a new episode of Cold War 2.0 Russia forcefully halted NATO expansion by invading Ukraine, with financial support of China. Although the EU and US denounced the "war crimes" as multiple cities were bombed, several countries opted less severe sanctions to keep importing diamonds and luxury goods and gas (and their loaned money) from Russia, seemingly creating a new iron curtain in Eastern Europe.
