Jukka Sakari Härmälä is the former CEO of Stora Enso Oyj, a mining advisor and one of the key players in the Finnish economy.

Career

Härmälä graduated as an economist from the Helsinki School of Economics in 1969. He worked for Enso-Gutzeit from 1970 to 1984 (merged to Stora Enso in 1998), as CFO and Executive Vice President of the sawmill business. Härmälä served as the bank Kansallis-Osake-Pankki's Executive Vice President from 1984 to 1988, from where he returned to Enso's service in 1988.[1]

As Stora Enso's President and CEO from 1999, Härmälä was also one of Finland's largest employees. In September 2007, the Finnish press was heavily criticized for cheering on Jukka Härmälä, as Stora Enso's failed 'conquest of America' resulted in a loss of EUR 5 billion. This includes the acquisition of Consolidated Papers in 2000. It was one of the largest and most unsuccessful acquisitions in Finnish economic history. The company's purchase price in 2000 was € 5 billion and the sale price in 2007 was € 1.8 billion.[2]

Jukka Härmälä resigned as CEO of Stora Enso after the Annual General Meeting in March 2007. Härmälä continued to work for Stora Enso until August 2007, when he retired.

Härmälä also holds many board positions.

Personal

Härmälä is married to Marjatta Härmälä, and they have three children. Jukka Härmälä enjoys the largest pension in Finland.[3] Retired Härmälä's monthly earnings in 2010 were EUR 62,089.
