John Pomian was a UK resident deep state operative. An associate of Józef Retinger, who founded the group, Pomian attended six Bilderberg meetings in the 1950s and was executive secretary of the steering committee until 1959.[1]
Background
John Pomian went to school in Warsaw but was at home on the family estate when the Germans invaded Poland in September 1939. His older half-brother was killed in the defence of Warsaw and Jan fled with his mother, via Italy to southern France. With the occupation of Vichy France by the Germans, he decided to join the Polish forces in Britain. His mother stayed behind and became a leading member of the F2 intelligence network, which earned her high decorations from Britain, France and Poland after the war.[1]
Career
Pomian decided to stay in Britain after the war. He won a scholarship to the London School of Economics from which he graduated in 1948, altered his name to the more accessible John Pomian and was naturalised as a British subject.
The Congress of Europe, arranged by the European Movement, had been held in The Hague in May 1948, and immediately after graduating Pomian went to work for its General Secretary Józef Retinger. He would go on working with him until his death in 1960 and, in 1973, write his biography (published as Joseph Retinger, Memoirs of an Éminence Grise).[1]
In December 1948 Pomian became executive secretary of the European Movement’s Central and Eastern European Commission under the chairmanship of Harold Macmillan. Its purpose was to prepare for the eventual integration of Eastern Europe into a united Europe.[1]
He also acted as secretary to the political committee of the NATO Parliamentary Conference.[1]
In 1965 with his friend the art historian Andrew Ciechanowiecki, Pomian set up the Heim Gallery in Jermyn Street, London, dealing in Old Master painting and sculpture.
