Janne Virkkunen is a Finnish journalist. He was the editor-in-chief of the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper from 1991 until his retirement in 2010.[1] Virkkunen was the chairman of the International Press Institute from 2008 to 2010.[2]

Virkkunen enrolled as a student in 1967 and graduated from Sanoma Oy's internal School of Journalism in 1972. He began his career as a journalist in the domestic department of Helsingin Sanomat in 1972 and became a political editor in 1973, and news editor 1989–1990.

In the early 1980s, Virkkunen co-authored the book Tamminiemen pesänjakajat, a controversial account of political power struggle in Finland towards the end of Urho Kekkonen's presidency.[3]

Virkkunen is the greatgrandson of composer Jean Sibelius[4]
