“Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.”
James Mattis (2006)  [1]

General James "Mad Dog" Mattis was sworn in as the U.S. Secretary of Defense on 20 January 2017.

Fallujah

General Mattis reportedly earned the nickname “Mad Dog” for leading U.S. Marines into battle in Fallujah, Iraq, in April 2004.[2]

Opposition to torture

In 2017, the New York Times stated that "Mr. Mattis has long opposed some of the aggressive interrogation methods used during President George W. Bush’s administration."[3]

Shoulder to shoulder with Britain

In November 2017, General Mattis said America and Britain will stand shoulder to shoulder in facing down the increasing threat from North Korea and Russia.

Newly appointed Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson was hosting his US counterpart in London for a bilateral meeting following two days of NATO defence ministers' meetings in Brussels.

Congratulating him on his appointment, which came in the wake of sleaze allegations that led to the resignation of Williamson's predecessor Sir Michael Fallon, Gen Mattis said it highlights the confidence Prime Minister Theresa May has placed in him.[4]

Lying about Syria

Commenting on US warplanes massacring around 100 Syrian and allied forces in Deir Ezzor on 7 February 2018, Mattis lied calling it “self-defense", and adding:

“Obviously we are not getting engaged in the Syrian civil war.”[5]
