Austrian central banker. Attended 2 Bilderberg meetings as member of the executive board of the European Central Bank.

Gertrude Trumpel-Gugerell was an Austrian economist, member of the Executive Committee of the European Central Bank from 2003 to 2011, during which time she attended two Bilderberg meetings. She previously was Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Austria from 1998 to 2003. She spoke commonly at the BIS[1].

Career

From 1998 to 2003, Tumpel-Gugerell was Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Austria. In connection with the BAWAG scandal, she was accused of embellishing the true extent of the bank's debt at Helmut Elsner's request in her capacity as the member of the Board of Directors responsible for banking supervision in the Austrian National Bank in order to prevent a more in-depth examination by the financial market supervisory authority. However, this accusation could not be confirmed.[2]

While a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, Tumpel-Gugerell was responsible for market operations, payment systems and market infrastructure as well as human resources, budget and organization.

From 2013 to 2014, she also chaired the European Commission's group of experts on the debt redemption fund and Eurobills; in 2014, she submitted the group's final report to President José Manuel Durão Barroso and Vice-President Olli Rehn[3]. In 2016, the Board of Directors of the European Stability Mechanism appointed her to assess the financial assistance programs to Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Cyprus from the ESM and its predecessor, the European Financial Stability Facility; her appointment is made by Jeroen Dijsselbloem, Head of the Eurogroup and de facto Chairman of the Board of the ESM, together with Klaus Regling, Managing Director of the ESM. Tumpel-Gugerell presented the report in June 2017.[4]

In 2018, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, appointed Tumpel-Gugerell to the External Advisory Group on Oversight, a group charged with reviewing the Fund's operational priorities through 2025.[5]

Tumpel-Gugerell is member of the Social Democrats (SPÖ).[6]

She was also a member of the Council of the University of Leoben.[7] Tumpel-Gugerell is an Emeritus Consultant at the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO).[8]
