When the Free Syrian Police (FSP) was established in Aleppo by the rebel Syrian National Coalition in 2013, it was said to be underequipped and underarmed.[1][2]

According to the then British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, the United Kingdom in 2014 was working with international donors to provide the Free Syrian Police with training, technical assistance, maintenance funds, and basic equipment.[3][4]

In early 2017, while the 3,000 or so western-backed White Helmets were being hurriedly withdrawn from Aleppo as the Syrian Army took control, the UK was reported to be providing roughly the same number of unarmed FSP officers, who were said to be undertaking community policing duties in the rebel-held areas of Aleppo, Idlib and Daraa provinces, with training and equipment.[5][6]
