Emad Abdalla Hassan was a prisoner in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp for many years, despite being cleared for transfer in 2010.[1] He was transferred to Oman on June 13, 2015.[2]
Contents
Background
Emad Abdalla Hassan is a Yemeni citizen. He travelled from Yemen to Pakistan to study as he was not able to access specialised higher education in Yemen. Emad is an intellectual with a passion for poetry, ranging from the great Sufi poets like Rumi, to English poets such as Wilfred Owen.[3]
Capture
He was captured in Faisalabad, Pakistan, and sold for $5000 to US forces.[3] During the interrogation that followed, he was asked if he knew Al Qaeda and he responded: “Yes, I know Al Qa'idah well." He was talking about a small village near where he grew up in Yemen. But this didn’t matter.
Indefinite Detention
No charges were brought against him, but he was transported to the United States Guantanamo Bay detention camps, where he has been repeatedly tortured over a period of years.[4][5][6]
Hunger strike and Force-Feeding
Hasan participated in the hunger strikes of 2005.[7] He was force fed thousands of times, often deliberately in a way to cause him pain.[4]
