East Jerusalem

East Jerusalem is the sector of Jerusalem that was held by Jordan after the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, as opposed to the western sector of the city, West Jerusalem, which was held by Israel. Under international law, East Jerusalem is considered a part of the West Bank and, therefore, of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
A number of states recognise East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine (such as Argentina, Brazil, China, Russia, and all 57 members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation), whereas other states (such as Australia, Finland, France, and others) assert that East Jerusalem "will be the capital of Palestine", while referring to it as "an occupied territory".[1]
While both Israel and Palestine have declared Jerusalem their capital, the Palestinians usually refer to East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.
In the 2016 US presidential election candidate Donald Trump vowed to recognise all of Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel if he won the election. In 2017, President Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and, on 14 May 2018, the United States moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.[2] On 8 December 2017, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson clarified that the President's statement "did not indicate any final status for Jerusalem" and "was very clear that the final status, including the borders, would be left to the two parties to negotiate and decide."
When US President Joe Biden visited Israel and Palestine in 2022, his delegation removed the Israeli flags from his vehicle upon entering East Jerusalem, in a move widely interpreted as signalling non recognition of Israeli sovereignty over East Jerusalem.[3]
