David Irvine is an Australian spook. He was the 12th ASIO Director-General of Security, proceeded by Paul O'Sullivan and succeeding Duncan Lewis.

Background

David Irvine was born in Perth, Western Australia where he attended Hale High school and the University of Western Australia with honors in Elizabethan history and a Bachelor of Arts degree. Prior to his first government position with the department of external affairs, he was a journalist[1].

Diplomatic Career

After joining the Australian Foreign League service in 1970 he was posted to Rome, Jakarta, Beijing and Port Moresby. It was in Bejing, he developed a friendship with Kevin Rudd whom made Irvine a godfather of his son, Nick[2]. From 1996-1999 he was a high commissioner to Papua New Guinea [3]. During his post to Papua New Guinea, the largest political scandal broke out defined as the "Sandline mercenary affair". At the peak of his diplomatic career, he secured a long term $25 billion liquified gas project contract with Dr Chau Chak [4]. Dr Chau Chak became mysteriously wealthy after joining the Communist Party in China[5].

ASIS

On the 1st of March 2003, Irvine became the director general of ASIS. In 2004 Irvine ordered a former intelligence officer to plant listening devices in Dili's cabinet office leading to a $40 billion dollar oil and gas treaty at the disadvantage of East Timorese[6].

ASIO

In March 2009, John Howard appointed Irvine as the Director General of security. On December 2, 2013 after Timor-Leste initiated proceedings David Irvine issued a search warrant of the Timor-Leste's Attorneys office seizing documents on the case[7].
