A large island nation in the southern hemisphere which is pioneering universal surveillance of its citizenry.

Australia is a nation state in Oceania to the west of New Zealand. It has been particularly aggressive in universal surveillance of its citizenry. In December 2018, it passed laws which claim the right to compel both "local and international providers -- including overseas communication giants such as Facebook and WhatsApp -- to remove electronic protections, conceal covert operations by government agencies, and help with access to devices or services."[1]

Universal surveillance of the citizenry

Full article: Australia/Universal surveillance

After a 2015 bill claimed that the government had rights to carry out very broad warrantless mass surveillance of electronic media, including banning warrant canaries. The powers claimed were so broad that they have been called "nearly unlimited",[2] but efforts continue to expand their scope and use more resources to track and monitor citizens.

Cashless society

In December 2016, the New Zealand Herald reported that "Australia could scrap the $100 note".[3] Earlier in the year some researchers were predicting that Australia would be a "fully cashless society by 2022"[4][5]

In December 2017, Australian banks began to freeze the accounts of bitcoin users.[6]

Law enforcement

"Victoria Police officers faked more than 258,000 roadside alcohol breath tests, an exhaustive audit by Professional Standards Command and statisticians has uncovered."[7][8]

Australia seems to have a disproportionate number of huge drug busts of MDMA and Methamphetamine).

Minerals

In 2015, it produced 12% of the world's Uranium.

History

Full article: Australia/1975 coup d'etat
Sir John Kerr, who on the CIA's orders invoked "reserve powers" and dismissed the Australian Prime minister

In 1975, the CIA used Marshall Green, to carry out a coup d'etat to remove the independent minded Gough Whitlam from power, who had been criticising US foreign policy. As of 2018, the coup was still not widely recognised as such, and widely referred to (for example by Wikipedia as a "constitutional crisis".[9]

Stef Blok“Give me one example of a multi-ethnic or multicultural society, where the original inhabitants are still living... and where they live in coexistence. I can't think of one. Don't say Australia or the US as the natives there have been exterminated.”Stef Blok2018
Yvette D'Ath“If you don't want to be vaccinated stay home. Don't go out because if you want to go out, go on holiday, travel around this country and internationally, if you want to go out and enjoy the footy. If you want to hug a loved one, you want to shake hands again, then you need to get vaccinated.”Yvette D'Ath2021
James O'Neill“Throughout 2020 the Chinese progressively barred imports from Australia, or imposed swingeing tariffs. The professed reasons for doing so by the Chinese were a fig leaf. The intention was clearly to damage Australian exports, and it succeeded, with volumes of goods sold to China dropping dramatically throughout 2020 and into 2021.

It was not just exports that were affected. China was also the largest source of foreign students in Australian universities, a multi-billion-dollar source of revenue. Literally hundreds of Australian university staff have been laid off in recent months. The Chinese government is openly advising students to look elsewhere for their education.
The anti-China policies of the Australian government have also extended to Chinese investment in Australia with Chinese investment proposals now being routinely disapproved.

One of the curiosities of this process is that the Australian mainstream media is almost totally silent on what is happening to their export income, Chinese students and foreign investment. It is uncanny how the mainstream media and politicians are very quiet about the enormous damage being done to their economy.”

Malcolm Turnbull“The laws of Australia prevail in Australia, I can assure you of that. The laws of mathematics are very commendable but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia.”Malcolm Turnbull14 July 2017
