Hollywood actress who died in fiery car crash

Anne Celeste Heche was an American actress, screenwriter and film director. She died in a fiery August 2022 car crash, presumed under the influence of alcohol or cocaine.[1] At the time of her death, Heche was in the process of directing and producing a film on child trafficking in Hollywood. While the crash consistently is framed in corporate media as a drug abuser who had an accident, there is speculation that she found out too much when researching her role, and that her car was tampered with as part of a cover-up.[2] On 18 August, the coroner ruled her death as an "accident".[3]

Life

Heche was the youngest of five children born to Donald and Nancy Heche. Her parents were Christian fundamentalists and she says she had a traumatic childhood. On March 3, 1983, when Heche was 13, her 45-year-old father died of HIV/AIDS, which she believed was contracted from a homosexual partner: "He was in complete denial until the day he died. We know he got it from his gay relationships. Absolutely. I don't think it was just one. He was a very promiscuous man, and we knew his lifestyle then", Heche said on Larry King Live.[4] Heche said that he repeatedly raped her from the time she was an infant until she was 12, giving her genital herpes.[5] When asked "But why would a gay man rape a girl?" in a 2001 interview with The Advocate, Heche replied "I don't think he was just a gay man. I think he was sexually deviant. My belief was that my father was gay and he had to cover that up. I think he was sexually abusive. The more he couldn't be who he was, the more that came out of him in [the] ways that it did."[5] In a 1998 interview, she reflected that her father being closeted ultimately "destroyed his happiness and our family. But it did teach me to tell the truth. Nothing else is worth anything."[6]

Three months after her father's death, Heche's 18-year-old brother Nathan was killed in a car crash.[7] The official determination was that he fell asleep at the wheel and struck a tree,[8] though Heche claimed it was suicide.[9].

Heche left Steve Martin in 1997 after a two-year relationship and subsequently dated comedian and host Ellen DeGeneres for three years. In 2001 she married cameraman Coley Laffoon, had a son with him (2002) and separated in January 2007. From autumn 2007 to early 2018 she was in a relationship with fellow actor James Tupper. The couple gave birth to a son in 2009.

Career

Heche went to school in New Jersey high school and was successful as an actress in the school theater, so that she got her first roles in television series while still at school. She decided to get her degree first.

She was best known for her role on Another World from 1987 to 1992 , for which she received an Emmy. She subsequently appeared in films such as Donnie Brasco, Volcano, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Wag the Dog (all 1997) and Six Days Seven Nights (1998). That same year, Heche was voted one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" by People Magazine. In 1998, she starred in Gus Van Sant's remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic Psycho.

Heche continued to find success on television, appearing on shows such as Ally McBeal and Everwood. In 2000, she directed a segment of the anthology film Women Love Women, starring Ellen DeGeneres and Sharon Stone, and in 2001, a segment of the television film Random, starring Andie MacDowell and Ellen DeGeneres. Until 2008, Heche embodied the lead role of Marin Frist in the television series Men in Trees. She was nominated for a Tony Award in 2005 for her role in the Broadway comedy Twentieth Century. In 2014 she developed the idea for the NBC comedy seriesBad Judge , which was discontinued after the first season.

She played the mother of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2017 biopic My Friend Dahmer. In the same year, she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which annually awards the Oscars.

Heche's work as an actress includes more than 80 productions. Several films and series were still in post-production at the time of her death.

Allegations against Harvey Weinstein

In a January 2018 interview, Heche alleged that Harvey Weinstein had exposed himself to Heche and demanded oral sex. The timeframe of the incident was not stated. Heche also stated that she was fired from an unspecified Miramax film in retaliation. She further stated that there were many other sexual harassment incidents that took place over her career. A spokesman for Weinstein acknowledged his being "friendly" with Heche, but denied all allegations.[10][11]

Death

On August 5, 2022, Heche was involved in a sequence of two car crashes in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles, first when the Mini Cooper she was driving hit a garage at an apartment complex, and second when she crashed into a house, resulting in a fire that left her severely burned.[12][13][14] A doorbell video recorded in the moments before the final crash shows Heche's vehicle rushing along a neighborhood street at a very high speed, followed a few seconds later by the sound of a crash.[15][16] The vehicle collision and resulting house fire required 59 firefighters to handle, who took 65 minutes to fully extinguish the fire and rescue Heche from the vehicle. The house was left structurally compromised and uninhabitable.[17]

Corporate media first blamed Heche's driving on alcohol due to a red-capped (vodka) bottle "seen" in the car[18] and a semi-tipsy radio broadcast recorded a few days prior (originally and mistakenly thought to having been made that same day[19]). However, official police reports announced that alcohol was ruled out / not detected in the blood test.[20]

One of Heche's latest projects, the Lifetime movie Girl in Room 13, is still scheduled to air later in 2022[20].

In the film, Heche plays the mother of a human trafficking victim. "This project is important to Anne and to every one of us," Amy Winter, Lifetime's executive vice president and head of programming, told the critics' group. “We all sought to make a film to shed light on this important issue.” Elisabeth Rohm, the movie's director, said Heche's performance is "phenomenal."[20]
