Anastasios Giannitsis is a Greek economist, Professor Emeritus of the University of Athens and former Minister.

Early Life

He was born in 1944 in Athens. He graduated from the German School of Athens.

He studied Law and Economics-Political Sciences at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and then obtained a PhD in Economics from the Free University of Berlin (1974).

Career

Since 1975, he was a member of the Teaching and Research Staff (Faculty) of the Department of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with the subject of Economic Development. He retired in 2011, when he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor.

He was one of the founding members of the Institute of Mediterranean Studies in Athens, which in the early 1980s presented a pioneering work on the role of both the European Mediterranean countries and the countries of the Mediterranean South.

In December 2009 he resigned as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lambrakis Press to take over as Chairman of the Board of Hellenic Petroleum.

On November 11, 2011, he took over as Minister of the Interior in the Papademos government, a position he held until May 17, 2012.

In March 2015 he took over as Chairman of the Board (non-executive member) of LAMDA Development.

On November 6, 2017, he was today awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Department of Mediterranean Studies of the University of the Aegean.

He was Chairman of the Council of Economic Experts in the Zolotas government. In 1990 he participated as a member of the Angelopoulos Committee for the preparation of a "Report on the stabilization and development of the Greek economy". From 1993 to 1994 he again assumed the duties of Chairman of the Council of Economic Experts, with George Gennimatas as Minister. He served as financial adviser to the prime ministers Andreas Papandreou, in 1994-95, and Costas Simitis, in the period 1996-2000.

He successively served as Minister of Labor and Social Insurance (2000-2001), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (2001-2004) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (February-March 2004) in the PASOK Government with Prime Minister Costas Simitis.

At the center of his scientific work are the issues of development theory and policy, the problems of the Greek economy, international economics, issues of European integration and economics of technology.
